Darkthorn has an incurable respiratory disease which might have been his downfall if not for the Overlord coming along at just the right time. The Overlord had his tinkerers design a full functioning atmospheric bubble suit that distributes clean air through a steam powered engine built into the suit. This allowed Darkthorn to not only survive but thrive. His powers expanded and his control of this steam environment has given him a great array of weaponry. He is still always at risk and reliant on the machinery to keep him upright.
